The Fool

by Dr. Wally Hostetter

Years ago I was being trained in moving surveillance. My trainer was a former FBI agent, Ralph Childs. I thought that the training would be similar to being a student driver. The trainer gives me an instruction and then I am graded on my ability to carry it out.  That may work in learning how to drive, but it had nothing at all to do with following a person in another vehicle.

We left downtown Atlanta in mid afternoon about four cars behind our target. The traffic was difficult, but I managed to stay close enough not to lose him, but not close enough for him to “make” us. That’s what it is called when the person you are following knows you are following.

We entered I-75/85 South just beyond the State Capitol and were heading toward the airport. Again, as far as I was concerned it was a breeze. Ralph was constantly giving me pointers teaching me how to maneuver and remove myself from the other driver’s sight line. Within twenty minutes we were exiting south of the Atlanta International Airport. Then the turns began. First a right. Then a left. Then two rights. It was becoming increasingly more difficult not to be seen. The last turn was the most interesting. It was a dead end.  We made the turn only to see the man exit his car and run toward us. Ralph said, “Let’s see what he has to say.”

He approached our car with care. I rolled down the window and said, “What’s up?”  He laughed and said, “I didn’t know this was a dead end. But that’s not why I’m laughing. You followed me without question. So, who’s the fool!”

Who is the fool?  The one who follows another to a dead end. There is no pun intended here. That is the end of the fool. Death. Judgment. Eternity.

We have the opportunity for the best training one could ever receive. Walking the Way of Jesus every day with the Holy Spirit as our guide.

Don’t follow the fool. Don’t be a fool. Walk the way of wisdom. Follow Jesus.
