What is Baby Dedication?

A Baby Dedication is a ceremony in which believing parents, and sometimes entire families, make a commitment before the Lord to submit a child to God's will and to raise that child according to God's Word and God's ways.

Responsibilities Involved in Baby Dedication
Christian parents who dedicate a child are making a promise to the Lord to do everything within their power to raise the child in a godly way, prayerfully until he or she can make a decision on his or her own to follow God. Parents who make this vow of commitment are instructed to raise the child in the ways of God, and not according to their own ways. Some of the responsibilities include teaching and training the child in God's Word, demonstrating an example of godliness, disciplining according to God's ways, and praying earnestly for the child.

Children are a gift from God.
As parents, being part of a loving church family can help you raise your children in the ways of the Lord. It is in this church family that your children will receive love, make friends, grow and even find their purpose.

The bible says that it is an act of obedience by parents to offer their baby to the Lord (Mark 10:13) and a public declaration of their intention as parents to lay a foundation of Godly principles, with an intention to raise their child with Christian values (Deut 6:5-7) and to guide and educate their child in accordance with God’s work (Eph 6:14)

Therefore, celebrating a moment when parents with their church family is a great way to express this promise to God.

Does this ensure salvation for my baby/child?
As Parents we cannot decide our child’s salvation for them. Each individual must make their own decision about their relationship with Christ. When a child becomes old enough to understand the concept of sin and their responsibility for that sin before God, they are then ready to make a decision about salvation. This age of understanding is not a pre-determined age, it is when the child has a true understanding and is able to express that understanding of their faith in Jesus as their Saviour, even in a childlike way (Matthew 18:3, Mark 10:14-15, Luke 18:17).

Parents can, however, lay a foundation by their teaching and example that will help a child be ready to make that most important decision. We do this in place of a baptism and then this allows you to watch them grow in their relationship with Jesus until the day they are ready to accept Jesus as Lord and Savior and get baptized in obedience.
